I scored a last minute ticket miracle to a fantastic triple bill tonight. Out of three bands I was the most excited to see J Roddy Walston and the Business. These guys were just fantastic and they prompted the crowd to get on their feet early into the show immediately killing the notorious awkward Orpheum theatre vibe. They craved energy and got it from by play a forty minute set of straight classic rock. Their harmonies are tight, J Roddy’s voice sounds similar to Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon, but the comparison stops there. He switches from guitar and keys and is more soulful and classic sounding than KoL.

Foals was up next. They have the typical new age alt pop rock sounds but they keep it grounded in clean blues riffs mixed with progressive grooves. They sounded a bit like a modernized talking heads, which was awesome, but then they jammed into some really slow moments and I started to think about how good J roddy was. Their biggest hit “my number” totally brought the house down and was definitely the high point of the near hour set.

Didn’t stay for cage the elephant unfortunately. Will have to catch them again some other time.
